Overview

Presented by Lowe Classics | Upper Triley Farm, Abergavenny

Lowe Classics are exceptionally proud to present what can only be described as a significant piece of Lotus history — a genuine pre-production Eclat Excel, built as one of just four prototype cars produced in 1982 ahead of the official Excel launch.

This car holds particular historical importance as the final Lotus model launched during the lifetime of Colin Chapman, and is widely regarded by marque enthusiasts as the last true Lotus — developed under Chapman’s philosophy of engineering purity, lightness and driver engagement.

Constructed by Lotus Cars as an evaluation and press vehicle, this very rare example carries chassis number ending 1148 and is understood to be one of the four original prototype Eclat Excels produced for testing, press and development purposes. Opportunities to acquire a documented Lotus prototype of this significance are exceptionally rare.

The car has clearly been cherished throughout its life and remains in outstanding overall condition. The bodywork presents superbly with no surface crazing or marking, a testament to careful ownership and correct storage. Beneath the body, the galvanised chassis is further protected with undercoating and presents extremely well.

Mechanically, the car is equally impressive. The engine was completely rebuilt approximately 10,000 miles ago, including new cylinder liners, and the car now shows 93,000 miles. It drives exceptionally well — tight, responsive and confidence-inspiring — feeling far closer to a freshly commissioned car than a 1980s classic.

The suspension has been thoughtfully uprated with polythene bushes and adjustable shock absorbers, enhancing both ride quality and handling while remaining true to the car’s original character. Power steering is fitted, complete with new pipework, making the Excel a genuinely usable and enjoyable classic on modern roads.

Further highlights include:

Original radio / cassette player

Original spare wheel and tool kit

Adjustable suspension

Galvanised and under-sealed chassis

Power steering

Exceptionally well-preserved interior

Accompanying the car is a comprehensive history file, including manuals, receipts and MOT certificates dating from 1987 through to 2023, clearly documenting long-term ownership, careful maintenance and preservation. The paperwork not only supports the car’s excellent condition but also cements its provenance as a pre-production prototype.

This is not simply a Lotus Excel — it is a landmark car in Lotus history, combining rarity, provenance and condition in a way that will appeal to the most discerning collector or marque enthusiast.

A truly special opportunity to acquire one of the most important Excels in existence.
