Overview
Austin Mini – Genuine John Cooper Conversion – Exceptional Restoration
LOWE Classics is delighted to offer what is unquestionably one of the finest and most special Minis we have ever had the pleasure of presenting for sale.
This is one of the very few genuine John Cooper-converted Minis, supported by an extraordinary history file dating back to the very beginning of its life. Most importantly, the documentation includes its original John Cooper invoices, giving the car the provenance required to distinguish it from the many later replicas and tribute cars.
The John Cooper name is inseparable from the Mini’s competition heritage. Cooper immediately recognised the potential within Alec Issigonis’ lightweight design, transforming the modest small car into one of the most successful and recognisable performance cars of its era. Genuine period conversions are now particularly difficult to find—especially with such comprehensive supporting documentation.
Recently restored to an exceptional standard, this example presents beautifully throughout. The quality and attention to detail are immediately apparent, while a substantial collection of invoices records the extensive work completed. Crucially, the restoration has retained the car’s identity, character and remarkable provenance rather than attempting to turn it into something it was never intended to be.
Its original 1.0-litre A-Series engine has been fully refreshed and thoughtfully enhanced using a selection of quality components from renowned Mini engine specialists MED Engineering. Now producing a very healthy 70bhp, it delivers considerably more performance than the figure might initially suggest when combined with the Mini’s exceptionally low weight.
The result is a wonderfully eager and engaging little car. Its crisp throttle response, characteristic A-Series soundtrack and famously direct handling combine to provide the sort of pure driving experience that made the performance Mini a legend in the first place.
What truly sets this car apart is the completeness of the package. It is not simply an attractive restored Mini or a later car wearing Cooper badges; it is a genuine John Cooper conversion with exceptional documentary provenance, its original engine, a superb recent restoration and invoices supporting both its early history and subsequent work.
Opportunities to acquire genuine John Cooper-converted Minis are rare. Finding one restored to this standard and accompanied by such an extensive history file—including its original John Cooper invoices—is rarer still.
This is quite possibly the best Mini we have ever offered for sale and represents an exceptional opportunity for a collector or enthusiast seeking a truly special example whose history fully supports its significance.
